A wide is a delivery that is deemed by the umpire to be too wide or high, to be hit by the batsman. It is a non legal delivery so does not count as one of the six balls of the over and it not counted as a ball faced by the batsman. Once a wide has been delivered a penalty number of runs are awarded to the batting team. The number of runs vary depending on the competition. Generally for the longer formats such as tests, one run is awarded. In one day competition the award is quite often two runs. These runs are added to the teams total but not the batsman's total. A batsman can only be out handled the ball, hit wicket, obstructing the field, run out. or stumped off a wide delivery. If the wicket keeper misses the ball the batsman can run. The runs scored are scored as wides and added to the teams total. If the ball crosses the boundary then 4 wides are added (on top of the penalty) and likewise 6 if it goes over, without bouncing. Wides are considered a negative statistic on the bowlers record. |
